Founded by Fernando Nilo in 2003, Recycla is a Chilean electronic waste recycling company. It was the first company of its kind in South America, where the authorities are overwhelmed by the ever-increasing amount of e-waste sent to landfills each year. Recycla employees collect obsolete and unwanted electronic devices directly from many companies and then sorts the components.
The sorted materials are then recycled, isolated or sent to specialized hazardous waste handling centres. However, Recycla goes beyond recycling electronic devices. As the founder himself says, the company also “recycles” people, by giving disadvantaged workers, particularly those with prison records, a chance to re-enter the working world. It is now estimated that 10% of Chile’s e-waste is taken care of by Recycla.
