The Waste Concern Group is an initiative of two civil engineers in Bangladesh, Iftekhar Enayetullah and Maqsood Sinha. Founded in 1995, the organization’s objective is to reduce the amount of waste cluttering the streets and neighbourhoods of Dhaka by applying the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle and recover to household waste. Waste Concern has set up factories to convert waste into compost, because 80% of the city’s waste is composed of organic materials.
In addition to relieving the burden on landfills, reducing urban pollution, decreasing the risk of soil and water contamination and providing work for disadvantaged people, the compost the company produces supplies an inexpensive organic fertilizer for the farmers who collaborate with Waste Concern, providing another positive impact on the environment. The organization currently transforms 30 tons of waste daily and intends to continue increasing its capacity.
