Founded by Tristan Lecomte in 1998, Alter Eco imports and distributes fair-trade products. It has a very large share of the free-trade market in France and offers more than 100 different types of products, from 30 countries around the world. The company offers a vast range of products, from rice from Thailand to pralines from the Dominican Republic. Alter Eco works directly with about 150,000 producers and employs about 50 people.

In his endeavour to run a fair-trade business, Tristan Lecomte also wants to show that it is possible to have a profitable company while supporting the development of disadvantaged countries. Alter Eco is committed to guaranteeing decent working conditions and fair remuneration for the producers in developing countries with whom they do business, who would otherwise be exploited. The company also encourages them to develop their own independence.
