Solution / The Butterfly Peace Garden

Established in Sri Lanka in 1996, the Butterfly Peace Garden is a non-governmental association whose purpose is to help children traumatized by the civil war or the devastating 2004 tsunami. Some have lost their families and homes as a result of these events; others are unable to put their difficult times behind them. The “garden” is a refuge where they can reconnect with themselves and overcome their suffering through art.

The Butterfly Peace Garden welcomes children from 6 to 16 years of age, regardless of religion, nationality or gender. One day a week, they participate in creative group workshops based on their personal interests, such as visual arts, drama or music. They move through the program in several stages, called “spirals” and learn to have fun, explore their inner creativity and, ultimately, to bring their new knowledge into the outside world.
