Johanne LALUMIÈRE

Solution / The Granby Zoo

Officially established in 1953, the Granby Zoo was founded by Pierre-Horace Boivin, a politician interested in animal life. Welcoming more than 500,000 visitors each year, the zoo's extensive collection has approximately 200 animal species. It is also one of the 200 zoos and aquariums in North America accredited by the AZA, a cooperative initiative for public education and species conservation.

In 2003, the Granby Zoo announced their plan to adopt sustainable practises and called on Joanne Lalumière to head the operations in the position of General Director. The Granby Zoo then implemented programs for public education, species conservation, captive population management, reduction of water use and energy efficiency, making the zoo a model to follow for other similar organizations.
