Soul City is a South African television series that airs during prime time on the national public broadcasting station in order to educate the public and raise awareness of a variety of social issues in an entertaining way. The project was introduced in 1994 by Dr. Garth Japhet with the goal of bringing about change in the prevailing mentality of Africans with regard to many public health issues.
Soul City reaches its audience by both television and radio. The subjects addressed include AIDS, vaccination, asthma, domestic violence and breast feeding. The series reaches an estimated audience of 12 million South Africans. The project’s success led to the creation of a spin-off series called Soul Buddyz, targeted at a younger audience.
