Sanitation services may be integrated into every day life in the majority of developed countries, but in certain parts of the world there is still a long way to go. It is estimated that over 2 million people die each year worldwide due to problems related to water quality and the absence of public sanitation services.
In Cambodia, one of the countries where the World Toilet Organization is active, the concept of toilets is not yet widespread in all parts of the country. Often, streams serve as latrines, which inevitably lead to contaminated drinking water downstream. As a result, it is estimated that 60% of Cambodians do not have access to clean drinking water and the mortality rate due to water-borne disease is shocking.
