Dr. NAMPERUMALSAMY

Issue / The Lack of Ophthalmic Care

In India, one of the most populated and poorest countries in the world, the healthcare inadequacies are a real scourge on the community. Since the healthcare system is subject to privatization and the government only pays 10% of the bill, the vast majority of Indians do not have the means to seek treatment or they incur huge debts in order to do so.

The World Health Organization estimates that half of the world’s 37 million blind people live in India. However, the life of a blind person in India is generally one of utter poverty, since they cannot meet their own needs or receive the necessary help. And yet, a large number of the ophthalmic problems that affect Indians could be easily treated.
