Aravind Eye Hospitals located throughout India are the initiative of Dr. Venkataswamy. Created just after he retired in 1976, Aravind Eye Hospitals are named after Sri Aurobindo, one of the 20th century’s most revered spiritual leaders. They strive to offer an affordable alternative to Indians who cannot afford to be treated in the mainstream healthcare system.
Aravind was a small facility with barely ten beds when it opened in 1976. After having treated millions of Indians free of charge or at a reduced fee, the organization now includes five hospitals, three hospitals specializing in ophthalmic problems, an ophthalmic product manufacturing facility and a research and training institute.
